Community Shares
When fall rolls around, everyone's thoughts turn to--workplace giving! At least, that's true for everyone involved in Greater Cleveland Community Shares, the federation of 21 non-profit agencies to which the Center belongs.
For the past three years I have been the Center's representative on the board of Community Shares. This has been one of the most gratifying organizational experiences I have ever had. One reason for this is that it is tremendously satisfying to be associated with an organization that consistently not only reaches but purpasses its financial goals. Last year, Shares raised over $240,000, of which more than $10,000 went to the Center.
Another source of satisfaction is that through Shares I am able to work for and support many causes and groups which individually I have neither the time nor the resources to help. These include the West Side Women's Center, the Women's Law Fund, 9 to 5, Templum House, Preterm, Environmental Health Watch, Housing Advocates Inc., and the Learning Disabilities Association, to name only a few. All of the member agencies must have an advocacy or social change component. Some-the Center and Preterm are examples--offer services perhaps too controversial for the more conventional workplace-giving federations to touch.
Since each agency is required to appoint a representative and an alternate to the Shares Board and to donate at least 72 volunteer hours a year, membership on the board has given me the opportunity to know the leaders of most of these groups. Many of them are 60's people who have chosen to invest their lives in the day-inand-day-out nuts and bolts of social change. The group is one of the least acrimonious I have ever encountered.
Much of the credit for these good things belongs to Executive Director Lana Cowell, who combines immense organizational skills and an uncanny memory for details with an unflappable temperament (though at this time of year she's pushed pretty close to the edge of flappability). She is joined by Associate Director Judy Maher and a staff of interns and volunteers who are invari-
ably friendly and helpful. If you have questions about Community Shares, give them
a call at 371-0209 or drop by the office in the Civic, West 207. But be advised that you may be drafted to stuff envelopes or carry materials to a worksite across town.
And remember to check off or write in "Community Shares" or "Community Shares--The Center" on your pledge card this fall.
Thanks
Hugs and kisses from the staff member of your choice (just kidding) to all of you who donated money, time, skills, muscle, and materials to our marathon renovation effort in August. We're halfway to completion, but to get there we need considerably more in donations of money and material. In the meantime, our staff is working in less than ideal conditions. Help!
Thanks also to the Cleveland City Country Dancers, who livened up our picnic & meeting at Edgewater Park last month.
Calling all volunteers
Remember that volunteer intake is held at the Center (1418 West 29th St) each Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Just walk in. These are some of our current volunteer needs: ●A-Team (clerical help, answering phones) Talent Show Committee Newsletter (editor and others)
Get out your date book
Talent Show auditions will be held on September 20 and 27. Call the Center for details. The show itself will be held on November 21 at the Civic (3130 Mayfield).
Reserve the evening of October 26 for the Center's annual meeting, at which Board elections and other exciting things will take place.
Board and staff notes
The Nominating Committee is currently preparing a slate of candidates for the upcoming Board election. If you are interested in being considered, call Leigh Robertson (522-1999) for details.
Congratulations to First V.P. Keith Sutton for his recent promotion to the presidency of his company, Meldrum and Fewsmith Arosom, and to board member Kim Taylor for her appointment to the executive directorship of SANE/Freeze (another Shares agency). Congratulations also to Aubrey Wertheim, Director of Services, who is away for September on a writing fellowship.
Keep an eye on Cleveland Magazine for an interview of Executive Director Leigh Robertson.
